Sarah Welge

Sarah Welge creating under the name Sarah Auryn Arts is a mixed media artist who is inspired by nature, emotion and geometry.

Chicago, Illinois

I completed my Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree with a concentration in Fashion Design at Columbia College Chicago in 2011. I have worked in many mediums for the past 20 years but I have recently taken to watercolors and charcoal creating mixed media paintings.

My inspiration comes from multiple sources, nature being one of them. I create work that is expressionist and abstract. I am interested in creating paintings that are a bit different or striking, that catch your eye and hold you there. They allow you to feel emotion and movement in the brush strokes and movement in how the watercolors mix.

Another source of inspiration for me is emotion and the geometric shapes I see in my imagination when I feel an emotion about something or someone. I keep my sketchbook next to my bed to draw my ideas, as they come to me often when I am getting ready to sleep.

All of my pieces explore the use of shadow, light and color to express emotion. I start with watercolors lying down the majority of the painting sometimes in layers and sometimes wet on wet. Then I go in with charcoal to create shadow and depth.
